The massive oil slick from the Baniyas power plant in Syria continues to threaten the shores of the island.
Speaking to BRT, the Prime Ministry Undersecretary Hüseyin Amcaoğlu said that the danger was still not over but that necessary measures had been taken off the coast of the Karpaz peninsula to prevent the oil slick from reaching the TRNC’s shores.
He added that a meeting will be held with the Ministry of Tourism and Environment to determine how to proceed with the process.
“This is a disaster that not only concerns Cyprus or the Eastern Mediterranean but the whole world,” Amcaoğlu said, adding that a 500m barrier was installed out at sea as a precautionary measure in the event currents turned the direction of the slick back to Cyprus.
He said that they had an additional 2000m barrier and two tugboats from Turkey ready to assist as part of their contingency plan.
Amcaoğlu said he was happy to say that no important traces of the slick were detected off the coast of the Karpaz peninsula so far.
