Maraş reopening marks 1st year
Date Added: 07 October 2021

It’s been a year since the process began to partially open up sections of the fenced-off city of Maraş which had remained closed to the public for 46 years.

Partially opening up on October 8, 2020 after remaining closed for decades in the wake of Turkey’s 1974 peace operation Maraş has attracted both people living in the TRNC as well as foreign tourists, with the environment and landscape around the town also boosting its appeal.

So far 3.5 per cent of the town has been converted from a military zone to a civilian zone following the initiation of a second phase in July 2021.

The first section to open up was a few main streets and an 800m beach front.

A playground and park located along Democracy Avenue which was renewed by the Gazimağusa Municipality was opened to the public in July this year.

The Bilal Ağa Masjid located within the town was also opened for worship on 20 July, 2021.

Efforts are currently underway to allow former residents to return to the area by applying to the TRNC Immovable Property Commission (IPC).
