President Ersin Tatar touched upon the Cyprus issue during a visit paid to him by a delegation from the European Leadership University on Tuesday.

“Two sovereign equal states and Turkey’s guarantee are sine qua non for us” Tatar said and stressed that the sovereign right lied behind a two state policy.

The President also added that a two state solution was fair, sustainable and rational.

“It is well known by the world that there are two peoples in Cyprus” he noted.

Stating that it was not possible to establish a partnership state with the Greek Cypriots and that a far-fetched solution was not possible, Tatar said “a two state solution is fair, sustainable and rational.”

Pointing out that the two sovereign equal states and Turkey’s guarantee are sine qua non for the Turkish Cypriots, the President said “I want to underline that we also want a solution. This solution should be based on the sovereign equality of two equal states. The two states can benefit from cooperation provided by the conveniences of the EU. It is not possible for us to look confidently to the future within the EU without Turkey’s guarantee.”
