President Ersin Tatar on Monday said that the water transfer project, dubbed the project of the century, had brought life to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Addressing the 5th International Conference on Natural Resources and Sustainable Environmental Management organised by the Near East University, Tatar said that 75million m3 (cubic meters) of water had been transferred from Turkey to the island which received less and less rainfall every passing year due to climate change.

The president warned that the TRNC like many other countries will experience serious problems due to climate change if it does not manage its resources properly.

He drew attention to the growing interest in the TRNC as a retirement destination, particularly due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The TRNC’s growing population makes water management all the more important. Environmental problems are a serious matter which could even lead to the annihilation of an entire generation which is why we must work academically and scientifically to protect the environment so that future generations may enjoy a comfortable life,” Tatar said
