President Ersin Tatar emphasized that a partnership republic in Cyprus is not possible and that if there is going to be a partnership it needs to be based on the sovereignty of two separate states.
The president made the statement while receiving a delegation from Turkey’s Good Party that are visiting the TRNC.
Noting that an agreement based on a federation is not possible, the President said the game is to patch the Turkish Cypriots under the guise of a federal republic in Cyprus and to send the Turkish Republic, which is not in the European Union, from the island.
“We will not fall prey to such a game. The policy put forward after I was elected President should be of the nature of two equally sovereign states living side by side with the support of Turkey. If this is possible, both peoples on the island will live in peace, tranquility and security in mutual cooperation. The sovereignty of the Turkish Cypriot people will continue as it always has” said Tatar and added that he is very pleased with the support given by Turkey.
Reminding that Cyprus was declared a Helenic Republic with the 15th of July coup carried out by Makarios in 1974, Tatar said that the Greek Cypriot side has always dreamed of connecting the island to Greece.
“Turkey is always by our side and supports us. What the other side wants is against international law. The Greek Cypriots are acting as though they are the sole owners of everything. We may not be recognized but there is a state here. There are two separate peoples, we have borders and we have students who come here from a variety of countries. Turkey recognizing us is more valuable than other countries recognizing us” said Tatar.
