President Ersin Tatar said on Wednesday that the only way to achieve a sustainable solution in Cyprus was through a two-state solution whereby the two states will cooperate.
Receiving a delegation from the Beşparmak Think tank group headed by Assist Prof. Dr Hasibe Şahoğlu, Tatar explained how Britain had violated the clauses of the treaty signed with the Ottoman Empire to rent the island.
“There was a clause in the treaty stipulating that the island must be returned to the Ottomans when they leave but through deceitful games, they annexed the island,” he said.
President Tatar also pointed out that the EU by allowing Cyprus to join the bloc had violated the terms of the 1960 Treaty of Establishment which clearly stated that the Republic could not become a member of any organisation that Turkey and Greece are not members of.
He reminded that the Turkish Cypriot side’s two-state policy was fully supported by Turkey.
Tatar warned that attempts were being made to trick the Turkish Cypriot people to accept a federal settlement in Cyprus which would reduce them into a minority within a Greek Cypriot dominated state.
He also defended his position and views stating that he has always acted in line with the public’s demands.
Tatar concluded by stating that no matter which hardships the Turkish Cypriot people were faced with, the only important thing was their state, their independence and their sovereignty.
