A decision has been adopted by the Council of Ministers to rename Kıvanç Tepe in the Girne-Karşıyaka area as Birkan Uzun tepe, after the Turkish Cypriot mountaineer who died recently in a skiing accident just two weeks after becoming the first Turkish Cypriot to climb Antarctica’s highest peak, Mt. Vinson.

In order to keep the eternal memory of “Birkan Uzun” alive, we have decided to name the Kıvanç tepe after Birkan Uzun, which is known as the highest peak by mountaineers in the Girne region. All necessary work and initiatives have been taken in this regard”, a statement from the Prime Ministry said.

The statement also said that Uzun’s memory will be kept alive forever as he had brought great pride to the Turkish Cypriot people with his accomplishments.
