The leader of the National Unity Party (UBP) and Prime Minister Faiz Sucuoğlu said that democracy was the victor in Sunday’s general elections in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
In his first interview after yesterday’s election to the Anadolu Agency, Sucuoğlu said that both the campaign period and voting process in the country had been carried out in a cordial atmosphere.
“Thank God we did not experience any problems. I always say that this is what makes this country so special and unique,” he said.
Touching upon relations with Turkey, the UBP leader said that Turkey continued and will continue to support the TRNC unconditionally at every obstacle and hardship it faced.
“We are a small country and our economy is vulnerable to all types of changing conditions. Our economy is based on services and we shall continue to work intensively with Turkey in the period ahead. We shall be solving all our problems with the support, contributions and experience of motherland Turkey,” he said.
Sucuoğlu reminded that Turkey and the TRNC were part of the same nation.
“We are an indispensible part of the Turkish nation, its guardian in the Eastern Mediterranean and the defender of its rights within the framework of the Blue Homeland doctrine,” he added.
Regarding a question as to which party the UBP could be forming a coalition with, Sucuoğlu said that any party which entered a coalition partnership with his party would need to share its views regarding economic reforms.
“The goal is to create a self-sufficient TRNC which can stand on its own feet. We will be determining a roadmap for the future. The day we succeed on standing on our feet will be the day we will move forward,” the prime minister stressed.
