President Ersin Tatar on Thursday held an online meeting with the Director General for Structural Reform Support at the European Commission Mario Nava and his delegation.
During the meeting, President Ersin Tatar stated that the Turkish Cypriot side is ready for cooperation with the European Union.
“Our position is to continue and further develop our cooperation with the EU on different issues such as environment, education, trade and tourism” said Tatar.
“It’s important to prevent the EU from discriminating against Turkish Cypriots. Our position is clear we want the continuation and development of our cooperation with the EU on issues such as environment, education, trade and tourism” said Tatar.
Emphasizing that the Turkish Cypriot side is ready to produce and implement projects to prevent economic problems on both sides of Cyprus due to the pandemic, President Tatar stated that EU-related projects take place through the work of the bilateral technical committees.
Pointing to the importance of the Turkish Cypriot side’s involvement in clean energy projects, Tatar stated that it is vital for the EU to invest in environmentally friendly green energy projects in the TRNC as environmental pollution knows no bounds.
Underlining that the obstacle to create cooperation and good relations between the two peoples on the island is the ongoing unjust isolations enforced against the Turkish Cypriot people, President Tatar reminded the European Union of the promises it gave to address the economic inequality between the two sides.
President Tatar stated that the imbalance between the two sides can be eliminated with economic and social investments including the development of the infrastructure of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and that this can encourage a balanced reconciliation between the two sides.
He stated that the Turkish Cypriot people expect the EU to keep its promises by abandoning the policies that will feed inequality.
