Members of the Republic’s Assembly who were elected to parliament during last month’s general elections were sworn in on Monday morning. The oldest of the 50 MPs, National Unity Party (UBP) MP Ünal Üstel chaired the first session of the new parliament.
The two youngest MPs, UBP İskele MP Emrah Yeşilırmak and Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Girne MP Ongun Talat served as the secretaries at the special parliamentary session.
President Ersin Tatar, who is currently isolating himself after contracting Covid-19, was unable to attend the ceremony as is customary.
It has been decided to hold elections for the Bureau of the Assembly at the next plenary to be held on Monday, February 21.
Tatar is expected to hand UBP leader Faiz Sucuoğlu the task of forming the new government by Wednesday at the latest.
Meanwhile, Sucuoğlu will be handing in his government’s resignation Monday afternoon as part of normal procedures for the creation of a new government.
