MFA: Nava’s statements prove EU’s biased stance on Cyprus

The TRNC Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Monday it was not surprised with the biased stance adopted by the Director General for Structural Reform Support at the European Commission Mario Nava in favour of the Greek Cypriot administration.

Nava had told a daily on Monday that the EU did not support a two-state solution in Cyprus and that it remained committed to a bi-communal, bi-zonal federal (BBF) solution based on the political equality of the two sides in Cyprus within the framework of UN parameters.

The TRNC Foreign Ministry said that the remarks made by the EU official were proof of the unconditional support given to the Greek Cypriot administration by the bloc.

It also pointed out that the EU, with this irreversible mistake had chosen the side it supported in Cyprus and that therefore the EU had no moral or legal ground when issuing remarks or passing judgment regarding the solution of the Cyprus issue.

The ministry reminded that talks to reach a bizonal, bi-communal federation model in Cyprus had been exhausted in Crans Montana following more than 50 years of inconclusive negotiations and that the Turkish Cypriot side had tabled its position in favour of a two-state solution during last year’s informal five-plus-one meeting in Geneva.

It called on EU officials who ignore the Turkish Cypriot peoples’ sovereign equality, to stop insisting on a federal settlement which was a relic of the past and to adopt a fairer stance in favour of Turkish Cypriots.
