The Undersecretary of the Prime Ministry and Chairman of the Hellim Coordination Council Hüseyin Amcaoğlu announced that the applications of Hellim manufacturers in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) are being evaluated within the scope of the ongoing efforts to export the traditional cheese to European markets.
Evaluating the latest developments to BRT, Amacoğlu stated that the first applications by TRNC manufacturers were made last week and that the process was moving along as envisaged.
He also said that other companies in the country were also preparing their applications.
Stating that they had heard through the press the Greek Cypriot side’s request to change the current milk rates, animal breeds, shape and weight of the cheese as specified by the Product of Designated Origin (PDO) registration , Amcaoğlu emphasized that it was important to finalize any changes in the registration through the joint agreement of both sides.
Explaining that as stated in the PDO’s implementing regulation, a working group should be formed to include stakeholders on both sides under the coordination of the European Commission, Amcaoğlu said that the issues should be discussed through this platform.
He also reminded that the European Commission has decided to appoint an independent inspection board for health inspections.
“Despite this decision, no appointment was made. In order for the process to continue, it is imperative that the necessary appointments be made in this regard,” said Amcaoğlu and added that the TRNC is doing its part.
