The latest developments in the Ukraine conflict was discussed at a high-level meeting held at the presidential palace on Thursday.
The meeting chaired by President Ersin Tatar was attended by Prime Minister Faiz Sucuoğlu, the Commander of the Turkish Peace Forces in Cyprus Major General Sezai Öztürk, the Commander of the Cyprus Turkish Security Forces Major General Zorlu Topaloğlu, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Hasan Taçoy, the President’s Undersecretary Okan Donangil, the Foreign Ministry Undersecretary İsmet Korukoğlu and the President’s Special Representative Ergün Olgun.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Tatar said that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), as all other countries, was monitoring the developments closely.
“We shall all see what the impact of this conflict will be on the TRNC. It seems that Cyprus will not be experiencing any issues at the moment. We evaluated the situation in light of the fact that we have British sovereign bases on the island. Our hope is that the conflict ends as soon as possible,” he said.
Tatar added that the biggest impact of the conflict on the TRNC will be the economy due to the upward trend in the price of oil and foreign exchange rates.
“It’s extremely important that we understand the value of peace and security at times like these. We are able to enjoy both as a result of Turkiye’s protection and guarantees. This is why the continuation of Turkiye’s active and effective guarantees is vital,” he said.
Tatar also said that what was important was reaching a just, lasting and sustainable solution in Cyprus.
“We need to think twice if an agreement to be reached will take us back to pre-1974 conditions, endangering our peace and security. Once again we understand how crucial and vital the continuation of Turkiye’s guarantee is for us when we take into account these sensitivities.”
