Foreign Minister Hasan Taçoy on Monday received a delegation of Azeri MPs, academics and union leaders who are in the TRNC to attend the Khojaly Massacre International Conference.

Foreign Ministry Undersecretary İsmet Korukoğlu as well as other ministry officials were also present at the meeting.

Speaking during the visit, Taçoy noted that the Azeri and Turkish Cypriot people had experienced similar incidents in the past.

“These incidents went down in history as incidents which we do not want to remember,” he added.

Noting that Armenians had repeated the genocide they attempted to carry out in Eastern Turkiye in 1915 with the Khojaly Massacre, he said that the Greek Cypriots intention to continue fostering hostile feelings against Turkish Cypriots was clearly revealed with the target practice given to priests from the Greek Cypriot Orthodox Church.

This he added was unacceptable.

Stating that the Turkish Cypriot people was less fortunate than Azerbaijan in voicing its cause to the international community and that the embargoes imposed on them still continued, Taçoy pointed to the importance of their respective countries showing solidarity and making their voice heard in the world.

He also underlined that an important task falls on the Diaspora Ministry of Azerbaijan on this issue.

The Azeri MPs for their part noted that the Turkish Cypriot and Azeri peoples had weathered the same hardships before reaching where they are today.

Referring to the importance of conducting mutual visits to further strengthen relations between the two countries, the Azeri MPs stressed that Baku which was informed of the just cause of the TRNC, supported its recognition as an independent state.
