Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Dönmez has said that new steps can be taken for the Eastern Mediterranean gas to reach the markets via Türkiye.

Turkish Minister Fatih Dönmez in his speech at the “20th Anniversary Meeting” organized by the European Energy Exchanges Association (EUROPEX) touched upon the alternatives for carrying the Eastern Mediterranean gas to the markets.

Dönmez stressed that Türkiye’s strong energy infrastructure and its stable and reliable partnership in international projects also make significant contributions to ensuring Europe’s energy supply security.

Stating that Türkiye ranks sixth in Europe and 14th in the world with its installed power exceeding 100 thousand MW, he said that 54 percent of the installed power consists of renewable energy sources.

“Türkiye has the highest installed power in Southeast Europe in its geography and maintains its relationship and trade with its neighbours in a healthy manner. When we consider our ongoing and completed projects from those regions, TANAP and the natural gas pipeline TurkStream, these are also extremely critical issues for Europe’s energy supply security. Maybe in the coming days, Eastern Mediterranean gas will also be delivered via Türkiye. New steps can be taken to reach the markets” Dönmez noted.

Noting that they have created an energy market with more participants with EPİAŞ, he stated that they allow the purchase and sale of electricity and natural gas under free market conditions in a transparent, stable and competitive environment.

Dönmez added that the activities carried out by EUROPEX, which brings energy exchanges together, are very valuable for the energy markets.

Pieter Schuurs, Chairman of the EUROPEX Board, said that EUROPEX is the key to success and a strong voice for exchanges.
