As part of her contacts in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) the European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms Elisa Ferreira also paid a visit to the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce (KTTO) on Thursday.
Further development of Green Line trade, ongoing efforts within the framework of the registration of Hellim as a Product of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) as well as the need to increase financial assistance to the Turkish Cypriots were discussed during the meeting.
The European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms Elisa Ferreira came together with the President of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce Turgay Deniz.
Speaking during the visit, Deniz shared his knowledge and views with Ferreira on the Green Line trade, the registration of Hellim and work being carried out to export the traditional cheese to the European market.
He also drew attention to the importance of stronger and more comprehensive financial support to the Turkish Cypriot economy in light of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Reminding that the European Union provided €11m in economic support to North Cyprus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Deniz stressed that this was not enough and repeated the chamber’s demand to increase this amount.
Noting that a €1.2bn supplementary budget was allocated for South Cyprus from the EU’s recovery and resilience fund, he said it was essential to allocate a portion of this fund to the Turkish Cypriot people.
