The Speaker of Parliament Zorlu Töre issued a message on Thursday on the anniversary of the coup carried out by the Greek Junta on July 15, 1974.

He reminded that Turkish Cypriots had been kicked out of the 1960 partnership Republic through the force of arms beginning in December of 1963.

Töre said that the aim of the fascist coup was to achieve ENOSIS or Union with Greece immediately by toppling the Makarios Administration which was trying to extend this process over time by resorting to political and economic methods.

In his message, the Speaker of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Parliament Zorlu Töre reminded that the Greek Cypriots had unleashed a campaign of terror against Turkish Cypriots in December of 1963 with the aim of achieving the goal of annexing the island to Greece.

He said that the junta in Greece had orchestrated the coup on the island after growing impatient over Makarios’ tactics and the heroic struggle for existence waged by the TMT organisation with the support of motherland Türkiye.

The parliamentary speaker said that on July 15, 1974, the EOKA-B terrorist organisation led by Nicos Sampson carried out a coup against the Makarios administration.

Töre reminded that hundreds of Greek Cypriots who resisted were killed and massacres were committed against the Turkish Cypriot people, prompting Türkiye to intervene as a guarantor power.

“Peace arrived in Cyprus as a result of the Turkish Peace Operation carried out on July 20, 1974 by Türkiye which exercised its rights stemming from the Treaties of Guarantee and Alliance. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus established by the Turkish Cypriot people who have lived freely and independently on this island from the beginning and who exercised their right to self-determination will continue to live on forever,” he said.
