The Speaker of Parliament Zorlu Töre issued a message on the anniversary of the coup carried out by the Greek Junta on July 15, 1974.
He said that there was peace and tranquillity on the island thanks to the 1974 Turkish Peace Operation.
He also issued a message on the 6th anniversary of the failed coup attempt against the Turkish nation by the FETÖ terrorist organisation.
Töre emphasized that the Turkish nation achieved an important victory on July, 15 2016.
In his message, the Speaker of the TRNC Parliament Zorlu Töre reminded that the Greek Cypriots had unleashed a campaign of terror against Turkish Cypriots in the December of 1963 with the aim of achieving the goal of annexing the island to Greece.
Töre reminded that hundreds of Greek Cypriots who resisted were killed and massacres were committed against the Turkish Cypriot people, prompting Türkiye to intervene as a guarantor power.
“Peace arrived in Cyprus as a result of the Turkish Peace Operation carried out on July 20, 1974 by Türkiye which exercised its rights stemming from the Treaties of Guarantee and Alliance. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus established by the Turkish Cypriot people who have lived freely and independently on this island from the beginning and who exercised their right to self-determination will continue to live on forever,” he said.
In a message he issued to mark the 15th July Democracy and National Unity Day, Parliamentary Speaker Zorlu Töre described the attempted coup d’etat on July 15, 2016 as one of the most sinister attacks in history.
Emphasizing that the Turkish nation achieved an important victory against the treacherous coup attempt, Töre said, “The coup attempt, which was intended to be carried out by the traitors had failed. I respectfully commemorate our 251 soldiers, policemen and civilians who were martyred and offer my condolences to their families and our Motherland Türkiye.”
“The nation which was determined through democracy can never be abandoned, and the nation will not be eliminated through dictatorship. As the great leader Atatürk said, “Sovereignty belongs to the nation, unconditionally!” said Töre.
