The Presidency announced that President Ersin Tatar gave instructions for an investigation to be carried out into the allegations that two UN Peacekeeping Force personnel caused damage and were demonstrating extremely reckless behaviour at Glapsides Beach.
In the statement, it was noted that a request had been made to the UN authorities calling for a quick and serious investigation to be carried out on the issue adding that “Our President Ersin Tatar will continue to follow the developments on the issue in order for an impartial investigation to be carried out in consultation with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) authorities.”
The following statements were included in the Presidency’s statement:
“After the media coverage of the allegations that two personnel of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus caused damage and were reckless at the Glapsides Beach in Gazimağusa, President Ersin Tatar called for the matter to be investigated immediately.
“During the meeting between President Ersin Tatar’s Special Representative Ergün Olgun and the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative and the head of the UN Peacekeeping Forces in Cyprus Colin Stewart, it was requested that the aforementioned incident be investigated seriously and quickly in cooperation with the TRNC authorities.
Mr. Stewart for his part informed MR. Olgun that he is fully aware of the seriousness of the incident and that the UN Military Police is ready to do the necessary work in cooperation with our General Directorate of Police.
Our President, Ersin Tatar, will continue to follow up on developments that will take place as a result of an impartial investigation to be carried out in consultation with the TRNC authorities.”
