Faiz Sucuoğlu has stepped down as the leader of the National Unity Party (UBP).

Sucuoğlu said that his decision had come down to end the ongoing leadership confusion within the UBP.

In a written statement issued after handing in his resignation, Faiz Sucuoğlu said that it had become obvious that the diarchy within the UBP was not only creating problems within the party but also not contributing to efforts aimed at solving the country’s problems.

“Even though I am not the one responsible for these problems, as a brother who loves his party and country, I can no longer blatantly allow the UBP to remain in this predicament,” Sucuoğlu said in his statement.

He added that he was only stepping down as party leader and would continue to serve the UBP, the country and resume his political career.

Sucuoğlu had remained as the UBP’s leader despite the fact that the current coalition government had been set up by Prime Minister Ünal Üstel following a political deadlock.

The party’s General Secretary Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu will serve as acting UBP leader until an extraordinary congress is held.
