National Unity Party (UBP) Secretary General Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu evaluated the United States (US) decision to lift the arms embargo imposed against the Greek Cypriot Administration.
Hasipoğlu stated that the decision contradicts the principle of bilateral equality on the island and will make the Greek Cypriot side more intransigent and added “This decision will also negatively affect the efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue.”
UBP Secretary General Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu issued a written statement regarding the US lifting the arms embargo that it had imposed against the Greek Cypriot Administration.
Criticizing the two-sided stance of the USA, Hasipoğlu said, “While the US administration is always trying to be an actor on the Cyprus issue and claims to support stability in the region, by deciding to arm the Greek Cypriot side and finalizing this decision it has made it impossible for us to believe that it is sincere in wanting peace and stability on the island”.
Hasipoğlu stated that this situation once again shows the importance of Türkiye’s guarantees and stated that the continuation of the active and effective guarantee of Motherland Türkiye cannot be discussed under any circumstances.
Stating that the decision in question contradicts the principle of bilateral equality on the island and will make the Greek Cypriot side more intransigent, Hasipoğlu said that it will also negatively affect the efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue.
“The decision will cause the Greek Cypriot side, which is already inclined to take up arms, to further arm and will harm peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean,” said Hasipoğlu, adding that they will continue to work for the recognition of the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
