President Ersin Tatar has thanked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for calling for the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in his address to the UN General Assembly.
Erdoğan, in his historic speech, drew attention to how much good will both Türkiye and the TRNC have exercised in order to reach an agreement on the island.
In his speech delivered on the first day of the 77th UN General Assembly in New York, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, among other international issues, urged the international community to make efforts to end the oppression of the Turkish Cypriot people, and to officially recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as soon as possible.
Erdoğan said that everyone was aware that there were two separate peoples and states on the island.
President Ersin Tatar, speaking after his Turkish counterpart’s address, said that the Turkish President had delivered a historic speech at the General Assembly which reflected the Turkish Cypriot people’s demands and expectations from the international community.
Tatar thanked Erdoğan for the call he made for the recognition of the Turkish Cypriot peoples’ sovereign equality and equal international status.
Pointing out that it was the first time such a call had been made in an address to the UN General Assembly, Tatar said, “We are thanking Mr Erdoğan for his historic call. I hope that the international community pays heed to his call, and a TRNC free of isolation and embargoes can take its deserved place within the international community. This call is one that will change the paradigms on the island.”
