The General Secretary of the National Unity Party (UBP) Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu said on Sunday that the Council of Europe’s latest decision concerning the Loizidou case proved that the propaganda campaign carried out by the Greek Cypriots was baseless and groundless.

He said that the decision by the Committee of Deputy Ministers of the Council of Europe legally validated the bizonality of the property regime on the island.

The UBP General Secretary Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu who evaluated the Council of Europe committee’s decision to end the supervision process in the implementation of a prior European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruling regarding the application by Titina Loizidou, said that the TRNC Immovable Property Commission which was recognized as an effective domestic remedy following the Arestis case had become the address for Greek Cypriot applications.

He pointed out that the Committee of Deputy Ministers of the Council of Europe had decided that Türkiye, against which the case had been filed, had fulfilled its obligations.

“Thus this decision confirms that from now on all Greek Cypriots will not be able to file a case directly with the ECHR but will need to go through the IPC. This decision proves that the propaganda carried out by Greek Cypriots for years is baseless and groundless,” Hasipoğlu said.

The UBP General Secretary said that the decisions taken by the IPC for compensation, exchange or restitution will be valid.

“Furthermore the decision adopted by the committee is in harmony with our model based on two seperate sovereign entities,” he said.

Hasipoğlu however pointed out that a mechanism similar to the IPC did not exist in the south for Turkish Cypriots and that Turkish Cypriot properties in the south were still subject to a guardianship law.
