Türkiye’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) has reacted to Washington’s decision to supply arms to Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration.
AKP Deputy Leader and Spokesman Ömer Çelik said that the US’ reckless support of arms in the Aegean and the Mediterranean will not have positive results either for NATO or for peace in the region.
Çelik added that this move will push Türkiye to increase its military presence in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
Speaking to reporters at the Central Committee meeting of Türkiye’s ruling party chaired by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, AKP spokesman Omer Celik made new statements against Greece, the Greek Cypriot administration and the United States.
“Unfortunately our ally the US is stockpiling weapons at its bases in Greece and that Athens is using the support of allies to threaten and harass Türkiye and its position in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean. Those who give this support to Greece should maintain the necessary attitude towards Türkiye as well. Considering Greece’s state policy, such reckless support of arms in the Aegean and the Mediterranean will not have positive results either for NATO or for peace in the region,” he said.
Çelik also referred to the issue of Cyprus, calling the US “irresponsible” with its decision to lift the arms embargo for a year.
“What’s the point of all this? You are once again adopting an attitude that will strengthen the aggressor’s side in the Aegean and the Mediterranean and lead to more illegal actions. Nothing will happen to Türkiye. We are further increasing weapons and military support to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” the AKP spokesman said:
Çelik stated that the actions of Washington on this matter were extremely short-sighted, even though it claimed that they want to strengthen their regional bases against Russia.
