There are growing reactions from the National Unity Party (UBP) to the United States’ (US) inclusion of Greek Cypriot National Guard troops in the US State Department Partnership Training Program as well as the lifting of the arms embargo on South Cyprus.

The National Unity Party MP Ahmet Savaşan said that there should be more reaction to the US-Greek Cypriot cooperation, especially from those who advocate a federal solution.

The issue of US-Greek Cypriot rapprochement continues to dominate the political agenda.

The National Unity Party MP Ahmet Savaşan said that the US-Greek Cypriot cooperation should stir more reactions, especially from those who advocate a federal solution.

Pointing out that there were extremely important developments in the region, Savaşan said that the developments did not serve any solution in Cyprus, but to the contrary, served to significantly heighten tensions in Cyprus and in the region.

“We expected a serious reaction from those who want a federal solution despite all the uncompromising actions of the Greek Cypriots, against the priests and MPs preparing for war by taking part in target practice drills. Now the arms embargo is lifted. There are developments that can seriously threaten peace in our country and in the region” he said.

He criticized some circles in the country who were trying to create the perception that the Greek Cypirot side was ready for a federal settlement.

“There are accusations that our president and Türkiye are creating obstacles to achieve a federal settlement by demanding a two-state solution. These criticisms are unfair and far from the reality. Over the past 50 years, the Greek Cypriot Administration has exhausted all options regarding a federal settlement. A new era has begun. We have to see this and strengthen our state by establishing a more effective and efficient political mechanism in the face of this new de facto situation,” Savaşan added.
