Olive Festival continuing

The 21st International Olive Festival which kicked-off on Friday is continuing.

The festival which aims at raising awareness on olive cultivation ends tomorrow.

A total of 20,000 olive tree saplings were distributed during the festival which also saw the participation of the Mayor of Gradara from Italy Philipo Gasperi.

Celebrations as part of the 21st International Olive Festival began on Friday with a cortege procession starting from the Girne Ramadan Cemil Square to the Atatürk Monument followed by an official opening ceremony at the Zeytinlik village square.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Mayor of Girne Nidai Güngördü had said that the aim of the festival was to raise awareness on olive cultivation, olive oil production as well as the consumption of olive oil and by-products.

President Ersin Tatar also delivered a speech at the ceremony highlighting the importance of promoting olive cultivation and drawing attention to the dangers of climate change.

He said that it was everyone’s duty to protect forests and olive groves.

Tatar concluded his speech by pointing out that the Turkish Cypriot people deserved to be part of the international community.
