Turkish Cypriot Member of the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) Hakkı Müftüzade criticized the Greek Cypriot Administration’s declaration of October 29 as the Day of Missing Persons in Cyprus.

He said that the issue will be raised at a meeting of the committee on Wednesday.

Stating that the issue of missing persons was not a subject to be exploited politically, Müftüzade noted that South Cyprus has failed to show the necessary sensitivity on such a sensitive and humanitarian issue.

Turkish Cypriot Member of the Committee on Missing Persons Hakkı Müftüzade evaluated the Greek Cypriot Administration’s decision to declare October 29 as the Day of Missing Persons in Cyprus during a program on BRT on Tuesday.

He reminded that the issue of missing persons was not open to political exploitation but that South Cyprus had violated an earlier agreement not to politicise the issue.

Müftüzade said that despite the fact that the members had respected that agreement the same could not be said about the political leadership in the south.

He pointed out that the three members of the committee held contacts at the UN Headquarters every year but that South Cyprus once again reflected these meetings in a biased way.

Noting that the Committee on Missing Persons had a duty to build confidence and that this should not be exploited for political gain, Müftüzade said that the Turkish Cypriot side’s objections on the issue will be raised at a meeting of the CMP on Wednesday.
