The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Zorlu Töre has said that a new era has begun for the Turkish Cypriot people and Türkiye, following the words of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who said “The world is bigger than 5” as well as his call for international recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Töre was speaking at a panel discussion at the Necmettin Erbakan University in Konya, Türkiye.

Addressing the discussion panel titled “Past and Present of Cyprus” held at the Necmettin Erbakan University in Konya, the Speaker of Parliament Zorlu Töre  reminded that the island of Cyprus had become Ottoman land in 1571 and had remained as Turkish territory for over 300 years.

He said that the Turkish Cypriot people had endured great pain and grief following the island’s British rule, until they were liberated by the Turkish Armed Forces in July 1974.

Töre also said that the first person in Cyprus to oppose talks on a federation with the Greek Cypriots was the late Necmettin Erbakan.

“The existence of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is now a reality. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made a historic call during his address at the UN on September 20, stating that the international community had persecuted the TRNC enough, and that now they should recognize it. With that call a new era has begun for the Turkish Cypriot people and Türkiye,” said Töre.

He expressed his view that the 20th of July Peace Operation would not have taken place if it had been left to the United Nations Security Council.

Töre said that the Turkish Cypriot people’s failed co-existence with Greek Cypriots proved that a unified Cyprus was not possible.
