President Ersin Tatar on Monday received the outgoing Turkish Ambassador to Lefkoşa Ali Murat Başçeri, whose term in office has ended.

Speaking first during the visit, Başçeri noted that his duty as the Ambassador to Lefkoşa, which he started on November 1, 2018, has come to an end, and that he will return to Ankara on Wednesday.

Stating that he was in close relations with each of the officials of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) during his tenure, Başceri, who noted that a good example of solidarity was displayed, thanked the officials of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

President Ersin Tatar for his part stated that Ali Murat Başçeri had more than 10 years of experience in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and that he, who also served as an undersecretary at the Embassy in the past, fulfilled his ambassadorial duty with this experience.

Tatar also pointed out Başçeri’s contributions to the construction of the Emergency Hospital, the supply of Covid-19 vaccines, the preparation of economic and financial cooperation protocols, and the Maraş opening, which was a turning point for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

“You have rendered important services to the Turkish Cypriot people. Your knowledge and experience are valuable to us. It is my hope and wish that your contribution to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will continue,” he said.

President Tatar also touched upon the Cyprus issue.

Stating that with the support of the Republic of Türkiye, the new policy on sovereign equality and equal international status was explained to the world, Tatar said, “We introduced the two-state policy into the government programme during my term as prime minister. We had a lot of work with you to fill this in. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, expressed this at the UN, and the acceptance of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as an observer member to the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) strengthened our policy.”

“You have already laid the groundwork for an agreement on the basis of two states in Cyprus, and after you have made significant progress, you are leaving here without looking back. I am confident that you will continue to contribute to explaining our two-state policy to the world,” the President added.

Noting that important duties awaited Başçeri from now on, President Tatar thanked the ambassador, whose term in office ended, on behalf of the Turkish Cypriot people.
