Magnitude 5.9 earthquake rattles north-western Türkiye

5.9 magnitude earthquake has rattled north western Türkiye.

The shallow tremor struck about 170 kilometres east of Istanbul, the country’s largest city, where it was strongly felt.

National authorities said the quake was at a magnitude of 5.9 and its epicentre was in Düzce province’s Gölyaka district, though it also shook other nearby cities.

AFAD said a 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered in Gölyaka District struck at 4.08am.

The quake occurred at a depth of 6.81 kilometers.

It was also felt in İstanbul and other provinces, including northwestern Bolu, Sakarya, Kocaeli, Bursa, Bilecik, and western İzmir and Kütahya provinces, as well as the capital Ankara.

50 people were injured including 37 in Düzce, 1 in Istanbul, 1 in Sakarya, 1 in Bolu, 6 in Zonguldak, and 4 in Bursa.

Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu, who arrived in Düzce immediately after the quake, said there are no fatalities.

Following the quake, a total of 74 aftershocks were recorded.

Power cuts are being imposed in the region as a precautionary measure, announced AFAD.
