The Cancer Research Foundation organised its 19th Orchid Walk on Sunday.

President Ersin Tatar gave the start to this year’s 9km long walk held between the Bufavento Junction and the Taşkent Picnic Site.

The annual event held since 2003 is aimed at raising awareness on cancer and to raise funds for the foundation.

Sponsored by Telsim, the event was co-organised by the CENGO-V foundation.

Speaking at the start of the walk, the head of the Cancer Research Foundation Prof. Dr Mustafa Camgöz said that over 1500 tickets had been sold this year and that more than 800 people were taking part in the hike.

Also speaking President Ersin Tatar drew attention to the importance for raising awareness for cancer.

He said that Prof Camgöz had put his name under numerous successful cancer trials and studies at the Imperial College in London.

“He is the pride of the Turkish Cypriot people,” Tatar added.

Tatar also said that the walk was being held for the first time in two years due to the pandemic but that during that time, the foundation had continued its activities online and through social media, sending out important messages and informing the public on how to prevent and receive treatment for cancer.
