48th anniversary of Yeşilırmak Resistance celebrated

The 48th anniversary of the Yeşilırmak Resistance and its liberation from surrounding Greek-Greek Cypriot forces was commemorated on Monday with ceremonies held in the area.

In the speeches made at the ceremony, it was emphasized that the people of Yeşilırmak showed an exemplary struggle despite the impossibilities they faced and did not surrender.

In line with the 48th anniversary of Yeşilırmak Resistance, the first ceremony was held at the Yeşilırmak Martyrs’ Cemetery, and the second ceremony was held in front of the Atatürk Bust located at the  5 Eylül Square.

Wreaths were laid a minutes silence was observed and the flags were raised to the singing of the National Anthem.

The special book was signed by the protocol at the ceremony at the Yeşilırmak Martyrs’ Cemetery.

The ceremony ended with the flowers being placed on the martyrs’ graves.

At the ceremony in front of the Atatürk Bust at the 5 Eylül Square, speeches pointing to the significance of the day were delivered.

Acting President and the Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Zorlu Töre stated that the Turkish Cypriot people had experienced many pains to come to where they are today and added that the Turkish Cypriot people are now living in freedom, under the shadow of the crescent and star flag, thanks to their struggles.

He also emphasized that the withdrawal of motherland Türkiye and the Turkish armed forces from the island would never be accepted and pointed out that these lands were made a homeland as a result of the great struggles and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) was established on these lands.

Noting that there may be problems in the country but these are only temporary and that the status of the TRNC will definitely rise one day, Töre drew attention to the need to be firmly attached and dedicated to the state and the republic.

Emphasizing that the Turkish Cypriot people will never abandon the state, acting President Töre said “There are Turkish Cypriot people and these people are proud to be a member of the Turkish nation.”

After the speeches, the ceremony ended with the reading of poems and an official parade.
