5.1 magnitude earthquake reported

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck in the Mediterranean Sea off the southwest coast of Cyprus in the early hours of the morning.

The quake took place at 23:03 p.m. local time about 58 kilometres west of the Baf province and was 65 kilometres below the surface, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and the European-Mediterranean Seismology Centre.

However the American Geologist Research Association reported that the earthquake was 5.3 magnitude and 30 kilometres below the surface.

The earthquake was felt in many regions of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus including the capital Lefkoşa.

President Ersin Tatar issued a message via his social media account after hearing of the earthquake that took place off the Mediterranean Sea.

The President in his message emphasised that he held a discussion with the head of the Civil Defence Organisation and was informed that no incidents had been detected due to the earthquake.

Prime Minister Dr. Faiz Sucuoğlu issued a message regarding the earthquake that took place in Baf late on Wednesday night

In his message the Premier wrote that the 5.1 magnitude earthquake that was reported in Baf was felt in Antalya, Turkiye and in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

He stated that it is pleasing to see that no negative effects were experienced from the earthquake in Turkiye or in the TRNC.
