6.4 magnitude quake hits Cyprus

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck the Eastern Mediterranean in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The epicentre of the quake was reported off the southwest coast of Cyprus.

The earthquake was particularly felt in Cyprus and in Turkey’s Antalya, Mersin, Hatay, Adana, Isparta, Burdur and Konya provinces.

According to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) the quake took place at 03.07, 215km (134 miles) off Turkey’s Mersin province.

The US Geological Survey centre reported the quake at a magnitude of 6.6.

President Ersin Tatar and Prime Minister Faiz Sucuoğlu both issued messages on their social media accounts regarding the earthquake.

“The earthquake off the coast of the Baf region was felt throughout the island…I was informed by the head of the Civil Defence that there are no casualties,” President Ersin Tatar wrote.

Sucuoğlu in his post said, “The earthquake with a 6.4 magnitude off the coast of the Baf region was felt throughout the TRNC. I was informed that there have been no casualties. I wish our people a speedy recovery”.

Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay also issued a message on social media expressing his heartfelt wishes to the Turkish Cypriot people.
