Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has been inspecting ongoing road projects in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) for a second day running.

Üstel on Friday inspected the stalled construction of the Gaziköy-Dilekkaya which will resume next week.

Infrastructure work to complete the final 1.7km stretch of the 14.2km road between the villages of Gaziköy and Dilekkaya is set to begin on Wednesday and asphalting is expected to be completed after November 15.

The road works are part of a project to renew 332km of village roads in line with a protocol signed in 2021 between the Turkish government and the TRNC Ministry of Public Works and Transportation

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel visited the area on Friday where he held inspections and was briefed by officials.

He was accompanied by the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı, the Mayor of Değirmenlik as well as other bureaucrats.

Speaking to reporters, Prime Minister Üstel said that the government was working round the clock to introduce reforms and upgrade the country’s infrastructure.

He said that the coalition was working in harmony to address the country’s outstanding problems some of which dated back for almost a decade.

Also speaking, the Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı said that the three-party coalition had taken action on three major road projects which had been stalled for years due to court injunctions and other financial and technical problems.

“I’m proud to say that we have completed the Güzelyurt-Lefke dual carriageway, are currently completing the Girne-Alsancak dual carriageway and now have given the start for the completion of the Gaziköy-Dilekkaya road,” he said.

Arıklı said that work on the final 1.7km stretch of the 14.2km road could finally commence after a court injunction was lifted. He however added that the final asphalting of the road will be carried out after November 15 due to a backlog in tarmac production.
