The Turkish Minister of National Defence Hulusi Akar said that the erosion of the Montreux Straits Convention, which has come to the agenda again with the Ukraine war, will not benefit anyone.
Making a statement regarding the Montreux convention, Minister Akar gave the clear message that Turkey will act within the boundaries drawn by the convention.
“We will continue to implement the 19th, 20th and 21st articles of the Montreux Straits Convention, as we have done so far,” Akar said.
“The erosion of the Montreux in any way, deterioration of the status quo does not benefit anyone. We see benefit in protecting Montreux. We continue our work within this framework” stated Akar.
On Monday the Turkish Defence Minister said that his country will fully comply with the Montreux Convention regarding the regime of the straits as tensions around Ukraine are mounting.
Ankara will also continue to reach out to Moscow and Kiev in a bid to help their relations to come back to normal, he said.
