Preparations are underway in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as the public prepares to say goodbye to another tough year due to the coronavirus pandemic and welcome the New Year with new hopes.
The Higher Committee for Infectious Diseases has also announced new measures ahead of the New Year.
A number of restrictions have been introduced in a bid to slow down the more contagious Omicron variant.
While only vaccinated individuals will be allowed to attend New Year parties and organisations this year, the committee stated that the social distancing rule will apply at all indoor and outdoor venues.
Non-vaccinated individuals will not be allowed to attend such events under any circumstances.
The committee has also advised the public to limit gatherings to 10 people per household.
Those attending such gatherings are required to undergo a PCR test in the last 72 hours or have a 24 hour negative rapid/antigen test.
Celebrations at schools, workplaces and state institutions are forbidden.
Health Minister Ali Pilli in an earlier statement called on the public to continue to adhere to all the measures in place, to wear face masks, practice social distancing and hygiene rules.
Meanwhile, the Police General Directorate has taken high precautionary measures so that the public will be able to spend the New Year’s in peace and safety.
A police statement called on the public to abide by traffic rules and to not drink and drive.
And the Meteorology Department predicts rain during the New Year.
The State Lottery will be carrying a special draw for New Year’s Eve. The special draw will be broadcast on December 31st 2021, live on BRT at 6pm.
And the Central Prison in Lefkoşa will not be allowing open visits due to the high rise in Covid-19 cases.
