The Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı has said that several road projects will be inaugurated this Wednesday as part of events marking the 20th of July Peace and Freedom Day.
Arıklı also unveiled new infrastructure projects that are to be launched soon.
Speaking to BRT on Monday, the Minister of Public Works and Transportation announced that Wednesday will be a busy day in terms of the opening of several recently completed projects, the final stretch of the Güzelyurt-Lefke dual carriage way being one of them.
“We are happy to announce that the dual carriage way which had only been partially opened in 2018 is now complete and that drivers as of Wednesday will be able to drive directly from Güzelyurt to Lefke without having to exit the double lane road. We are now waiting for an official from the Turkish government who will be with us on the day,” he said.
Arıklı however said that the foundation laying ceremony of the much anticipated new Lefkoşa state hospital project and the inauguration of the new Ercan airport terminal building will not take place this week as was previously announced due to unforeseen delays outside of their control.
He added that the goal was to inaugurate the new terminal building on November 15 as part of Republic Day celebrations.
“The new terminal building will have the capacity to serve 10m passengers. It is truly a magnificent project,” Arıklı said.
The public works and transportation minister said that work on the Girne-Alsancak dual carriage was also suspended after there were no bids made to the tender launched.
He however said that work to renew the road leading to the Apostolos Andreas Monastery from Dipkarpaz village will begin in September and will be completed before the end of the year.
Regarding investments on sea ports, Arıklı said that management of the ports will be privatized through a public-private partnership initiative.
He added that the ports required urgent repairs and a face lift.
