Atatürk to be remembered tomorrow

A number of ceremonies will be held on Wednesday to mark the 83rd anniversary of the death of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern day Turkey

Sirens will go off at exactly 9:05 tomorrow morning, marking the time of the death of the most revered figure in modern Turkish history.

A minutes silence will be observed and the flags will be lowered to half mast across the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Separate ceremonies will be held throughout all districts.

A ceremony will be held at 9am tomorrow morning at the Atatürk Monument in the capital Lefkoşa.

Wreaths will be placed, a minutes silence will be observed and the flags will be lowered to half mast followed by the national anthem.

The day’s second rememberance ceremony will be held at the Atatürk Culture Centre in Lefkoşa at 9.30am.

The Commander of the Turkish Peace Forces in Cyprus (KTBK) Lieutenant General Sezai Öztürk, the Turkish Ambassador to Lefkoşa Ali Murat Başçevi, the Minister of National Education and Culture Olgun Amcaoğlu and President Ersin Tatar will be delivering speeches at the event.

The ceremony will end with an oratorio and presentation to be delivered by the Lefkoşa Anadolu High School of Fine Arts.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Önder Sennaroğlu issued a statement to mark the anniversary of the passing of the great Turkish leader.

He said that Atatürk who had led the Turkish nation to independence after emerging victorious in the Turkish War of Independence had become a source of pride and inspiration for those struggling against imperialism.

Sennaroğlu also said that Atatürk who was a real visionary and pioneer set Turkey on the path of becoming a modern nation.

He added that the Turkish Cypriot people continued to move forward on the basis of the democratic and secular principles introduced by the late Turkish leader.
