The leader of the main opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Tufan Erhürman said that there can be no ground to restart negotiations so long as the Turkish Cypriot side insisted on the precondition of the recognition of its sovereign equality.
Erhürman was evaluating the closed-door briefing given by President Ersin Tatar to parliament.
The CTP leader said that contrary to Parliamentary Speaker Zorlu Töre’s remarks, the meeting was not very productive.
The leader of the main opposition CTP Tufan Erhürman expressed his disapproval over the briefing given by the president to MPs during Thursday’s extraordinary session.
“Unfortunately it was not a very productive or meaningful meeting. It was just a repeat of known positions,” said Erhürman arguing that the Turkish Cypriot side’s precondition for the recognition of its sovereign equality left no chance of launching a new process.
The CTP leader said his party’s views were known and that they believe it would be wrong to create the perception that it was the Turkish Cypriot side which was running away from the table.
Erhürman also said that his party supported the adoption of confidence-building measures which would include Türkiye.
“The Direct Trade Regulation, problems arising from mixed marriages, and the use of the Turkish Lira are other issues which could be addressed,” added the CTP leader.
Erhürman said that his party had no expectations from New York.
