The Prime Ministry Undersecretary and head of the Disaster and Crisis Management Committee Hüseyin Amcaoğlu said on Monday that the crisis management desk had completed its task concerning the oil slick threatening Cyprus’s eastern coastline.
He added that the issue from this point onwards would be monitored by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment.
Amcaoğlu who was speaking following a meeting with representatives from the Environment Ministry, said that small remnants of the fuel oil was detected drifting towards Hatay Turkey.
He pointed out that most of the slick had now sunk to the bottom of the sea while some of it had evaporated.
The Prime Ministry Undersecretary said that the crisis desk had completed its task but could be reformed if the need emerged.
Amacaoğlu also pointed to the importance of upgrading institutions such as the coastguard to be able to deal with such disasters.
The Mayor of Dipkarpaz Suphi Çoşkun who was also present at the meeting thanked officials from motherland Turkey and said that it was safe for the public to swim or fish in the area.
