In line with October 8 Prison Wardens Day, Bayrak Radio Television Corporation is hosting a photograph exhibition about the Central Prison in order to raise awareness.
The photograph exhibition tells the story of the prisoners, the guards and the prison.
Government officials were among those who attended the opening of the exhibition on Monday.
An exhibition was open at Bayrak Radio Television Corporation (BRTK) on Monday as part of events marking October 8 Prison Wardens Day.
The project titled “Döngü” (Cycle) carried out by Meryem Özkurt tells the story of the prisoners, the guards and the central prison.
Curated by Ayhatun Ateşin, the exhibition features 40 photographs taken by Guardian Hüseyin Çekirdek.
Among those who attended the exhibition’s opening on Monday was acting President and Speaker of the TRNC Parliament Zorlu Töre, the Deputy Prime Minister-Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu, the Minister of Labour and Social Security Hasan Taçoy and UBP MP Resmiye Çanaltay.
Speaking at the event, the Director of BRT Meryem Özkurt said it was important to raise society’s awareness on the prison system in the country, the state of the prisons, the inmates serving sentences and the prison wardens responsible for their care.
She said that the 40 photographs on display was an important window into life at the central prison.
Also speaking the Acting President and Speaker of Parliament Zorlu Töre said that life in prison was difficult and that there were numerous issues concerning inmates that needed to be addressed.
Töre said that it was important to speed up the judicial process in the TRNC with more conditional parole granted for inmates who are serving sentences for petty crimes.
The Deputy Prime Minister Fikri Ataoğlu for his part said that the new prison building which will become operational in the coming months will create more comfortable conditions for inmates.
The Minister of Labour and Social Security Hasan Taçoy said that was important to rehabilitate inmates and to help them integrate back into society once they served time for their crimes.
He said that a responsibility fell on everyone.
The photograph exhibition edited by Mehmet Gökyiğit is taking place at the entrance hall of the BRTK HD Studios.
The exhibition was sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment, the Department of Culture, the Public Employees Union, the Lefkoşa Lions Club and BRT-KOOP.
