Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who attended the first-ever meeting of the European Political Community in Prague made important statements on the Cyprus issue.

Stressing that Ankara does not seek to acquire the territory or sovereignty of any country, Erdoğan said Türkiye was only fighting to protect its interests and those of Turkish Cypriots.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who attended the first-ever meeting of the European Political Community in Prague held a press conference at the Prague Castle following his bilateral meetings.

Evaluating the Cyprus issue, the latest developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean as well as the tensions with Greece during the press conference, the Turkish President said “we do not seek to acquire the territory or sovereignty of any country. We are only fighting to protect our interests and those of Turkish Cypriots.”

Erdoğan also reminded that they have repeatedly stated that they want to solve the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean problems within the framework of international law.

“Türkiye expects the European Union to call on Greece for dialogue on a bilateral basis instead of supporting illegal initiatives” he said.

On the Cyprus issue, Erdoğan underlined that the only key to a solution was the recognition of the Turkish Cypriot people’s sovereign equality and equal international status with the Greek Cypriot administration.

“For a permanent solution, the facts on the island must be accepted” he stressed.
