A panel discussion titled “the Future of Electricity” was organized by the Faculty of Business and Economics of the Eastern Mediterranean University (DAU) to draw attention to the energy problem in the country.
Minister of Finance Sunat Atun also took part in the panel discussion and emphasized that the project of bringing electricity from Turkiye via cable is a project that will fully ensure the energy supply and security of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
Noting that the project not being implemented today does not mean that it will not be implemented in the future, Atun said “This is a visionary project. Technically speaking, it is a project that will ensure the energy quality and uninterrupted supply to our country.”
He added that the project will also enable the country to benefit from the solar energy potential at a much larger capacity.
He emphasized that when the project is considered in the medium and long term, it is a project that will open the way between Turkiye – the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus – Israel and South Cyprus.
Stating that he believes this situation will lead the way for a permanent solution to be found to the Cyprus problem, Atun said “The project is a visionary project, one that should never be abandoned.”
Noting that when we take the power cuts in the country into consideration, it can clearly be seen that many incidents around the world are a factor to this problem, Atun reminded that the Russia-Ukraine crisis has had a negative impact on many countries around the world.
“We, as a country, were adversely affected by this,” Atun said.
