The National Unity Party (UBP) General Secretary and Gazimağusa deputy Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu has said that the Greek Cypriot Administration, which continues its arming campaign with the encouragement of the US, is making a futile effort against Türkiye.

Hasipoğlu’s words came during a programme he attended on BRT and answered questions relating to the Greek Cypriot side’s armament and the US’s role.

Touching upon the close relations between the Greek Cypriot side and the US, Hasipoğlu said that at the point reached it seemed as though the Greek Cypriot administration is being rewarded for its decision which was in support of Ukraine and against Russia.

“The US wants to have a greater say in Cyprus, it wants to see it as a base for both its political and economic interests,” Hasipoğlu said.

Pointing out that with the support of the US, South Cyprus has begun an armament campaign; Hasipoğlu said that no one should underestimate Türkiye.

He also said that everyone should be aware of the steps that may be taken if the Turkish Cypriot people’s security is put into question and Türkiye feels the need to intervene.

“The Greek Cypriot Administration, which continues to arm itself every passing day, has no power over Türkiye”, said Hasipoğlu, adding that the Greek Cypriot side was trying to create a false perception that it wants a solution on the island, thus inviting the Turkish Cypriot side to discuss a federal settlement.

Stating that Türkiye and the TRNC will not stand idly, Hasipoğlu noted that they will continue with their diplomacy based on their security, common rights and interests.

Evaluating the legal and political dimensions of the call for the recognition of the TRNC by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the UBP General Secretary said that the historic call added a new dimension to the Cyprus issue.

Also referring to the statements made by Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu regarding the UN, Hasipoğlu said that they fully supported the foreign minister’s position.

“The TRNC’s demand for sovereign equality and equal international status is a demand not only valid for the Greek Cypriot side but also for the UN,” said Hasipoğlu and added that they expect the UN to recognize the Turkish Cypriot side’s equality not only at the negotiating table, but also outside of the talks.
