The Taksim Stadium in the capital Lefkoşa, which is of great cultural importance both due its location and history, is being revived as a football pitch to be used by the public.
The stadium, located along the UN buffer zone, which until recently was used for car rallies, had not been used as a football pitch for a long time.
The second stage of work to renew the football pitch was launched on Monday following the completion of the tender process carried out as a result of the state’s and government’s initiative launched with the United Nations (UN)
Taksim Stadium, perhaps the most important stadium in Turkish Cypriots’ sporting history, is coming to life again in the capital Lefkoşa.
Located just beneath the old city walls along the buffer zone, the stadium, owned by Çetinkaya, once used to attract thousands of spectators who came to support their team.
More recently it was used for races organised jointly by the North Cyprus Touring Automobile Association and the Greek Cypriot Automobile Association.
The second stage of the project to revive the stadium has begun.
Once the pitch is levelled, it will be laid with synthetic turf, allowing athletes from all countries, especially the youth of Lefkoşa to train.
The work is planned to be completed in a month and a half, weather permitting.
