Martyrs from the village of İnönü were commemorated with a ceremony on Tuesday.
Martyrs from the İnönü village who were ambushed and killed by Greek Cypriots whilst on their way to work in Gazimağusa on July 12 1958 were remembered on Tuesday with a special ceremony.
The ceremony which marked the 64th anniversary of their deaths took place in front of the İnönü Martyrs Monument where wreaths were laid according to protocol.
Following this a minutes silence was observed, rounds were fired in salute to the martyrs and flags were raised to the national anthem.
Delivering a speech at the ceremony, the Mayor of İnönü Ali Öncül stressed that the martyrs should not be forgotten.
“It was not easy to reach these days. The existence of the Turkish Cypriots on this island was a result of the struggle waged during those years” Öncül noted.
President Ersin Tatar in his speech noted that the Turkish Cypriot people did not yield despite the many martyrs who fell between 1958 and 1974, resisting all attacks against it.
He also underlined that the motherland Türkiye had always stood by the Turkish Cypriots.
Stating that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has achieved important strides since then, growing stronger and developing, the president said despite all kinds of attempts to prevent the Turkish Cypriots from moving forward, efforts towards preserving the peace on this island on the basis of sovereign equality and the cooperation of two states was continuing with a joint policy developed with Turkiye.
“We want peace in Cyprus and that’s why I recently made new proposals to the Greek Cypriot side. These proposals are for the benefit of both sides,” Tatar noted and reminded that these proposals were also shared with the public.
At the end of his speech, President Tatar gave a message to the whole world and said “we want equality in Cyprus. We want the state to live forever on the basis of sovereignty because peace can only be possible on this basis.”
