Turkey has already sent ships equipped with 1,100 meters of sea barrier, oil skimmers, oil absorbent pads and containment tanks to the TRNC to deal with any contingency, Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Adil Karaismailoğlu said on Thursday.
Speaking during a ceremony in Turkey, Karaismailoğlu said that the immediate danger was over after the sheen of fuel floating across the Mediterranean from the spill in Syria moved away from the north of Cyprus on Wednesday thanks to shifting winds.
The Turkish Minister also said that the ministry was monitoring the developments and was on high alert so as to prevent the oil from reaching Turkey or the Cyprus.
“We’ve taken all our measures. Our teams are in the area and we are vigilant,” he said, adding that Turkey was experienced to deal with such disasters.
