Majority of TCs support a two-state solution, reveals survey

The majority of the Turkish Cypriot People support a two-state solution in Cyprus, the results of a public survey have revealed.

Evaluating the results of the survey ahead of President Ersin Tatar’s upcoming visit to New York, Presidential Political Affairs Advisor Anıl Kaya said that the survey revealed that the policy pursued by the president on the Cyprus Issue was seriously supported.

The survey carried out by Red border Research and Consulting with a group of 1010 participants showed that 49.2 per cent believed that a two-state solution in Cyprus based on sovereign equality was the most realistic option.

While 33.1 per cent expressed support for a federal settlement, 11.3 per cent supported annexation by Turkey.

Four per cent said the best solution option was living under the roof of the so-called Republic of Cyprus (RoC) and one per cent said that a confederation was the solution model.

One per cent of the respondents said they did not have an idea while 0.4 per cent said they didn’t support any solution model.

A 58.2 per cent majority said that the continuation of Turkey’s guarantees was ‘very important’ while 22.8 per cent said it was important.

10.7 per cent said it was not important while 3.6 said it was not important at all.

4.4 per cent were neutral on the issue.

In response to a question on the importance of the presence of Turkish troops on the island, 58.8 per cent said it was ‘very important’ while 24.4 per cent said it was ‘important.’

54.1 per cent of the participants said that they saw Turkey as their motherland while 25.3 per cent said they saw Turkey as a friendly and sister country.

15.6 per cent said they saw Turkey as a guarantor country while 2.6 per cent said they perceived Ankara as an occupying force.
