Martyrs who fell during the 1964 resistance that took place at the Malya village were commemorated with a ceremony held in front of the Malya Martyrs’ Monument in Aydınköy this morning/ on Thursday.
The ceremony began with the laying of wreaths followed by a minutes silence and the flags raised to the reciting of the national anthem.
A speech emphasizing the importance of the day was delivered by a local during the ceremony.
Information regarding the struggle for freedom waged by the Turkish Cypriot people in the village of Malya on March 10, 1964 was given.
Meanwhile, President Ersin Tatar on Wednesday issued a message to mark the Malya-Bağlarbaşı Martyrs’ Remembrance Day.
In his message President Tatar stated that attacks against Turkish Cypriots by the Greek-Greek Cypriot duo prior to 1974 in the Malya and the Bağlarbaşı villages had turned into a massacre.
He added that this brutality and cruelty will never be forgotten.
Noting that any agreement that will bring the country to pre-1974 conditions cannot be accepted, Tatar stated that the Turkish Cypriots will not accept becoming a minority nor will they abandon their state or sovereignty.
